A guided tour through a century and a half of scent: the origins of the very first perfume, the first fragrance houses and perfumers behind them, and smelling sessions with the most iconic fragrances throughout history. Taught by Kathryn, Tami, and Kara of the Serendipitee NYC Team. No experience required — but regardless if you are a newly minted perfume enthusiast or a true industry veteran, you will find value in this course.
By the end, you’ll be able to —
Place any fragrance in its historical lineage
Recognize the landmark scents and why they mattered
Understand how new molecules created new genres
Speak fluently about perfumery’s movements and eras

The modules
This course is designed to help complete and perfect your understanding of the fragrance landscape today through a deep dive into the landmark scents, prolific perfumers, and fragrance houses that shaped how and why the perfume industry evolved.
You’ll receive an Olfactorium of 24 fine fragrances to use as your mini perfumer’s palette. This goes beyond smelling alone: for each fragrance, you’ll hear the story behind it — the perfumer and their inspiration — and the historical and cultural context of its time.
The Olfactorium
Every student receives the Olfactorium — a mini perfumer’s palette of twenty-four fine fragrance vials, produced by Cinquième Sens in Paris and shipped to you directly from the atelier (included in the registration fee). It’s the working instrument for the smelling session — and it’s yours to keep, a reference library for your nose long after the course ends.
